New rules on 3G handset design can help raise ARPU
October 8, 2003
There are implicit rules that guide the design and development of mobile
phones. They can be called the OUNIT design rules. Though they have existed
informally ever since the very first mass-market fixed telephone handsets
appeared in the late Nineteenth century, today's wireless industry will
benefit financially from deliberately employing the thinking that lies
behind the UNIT concept. It is an approach to wireless handset design
and development created by Design UNIT of Korea.
The elements that make up the UNIT criteria are:
Usability
Non-conformity
Integration
Transferability
In brief, high levels of UNIT make phones more attractive to the end
user but limited application of the UNIT criteria in the design of handsets
leaves phones with low levels of appeal.
The conclusion is that powerful OUNIT design, strongly employing all
four elements across the handset can help carriers sell more services,
handset vendors sell more diverse handsets in greater volumes and inspire
application developers to release even more appealing apps.
