CDG Defends CDMA2000
October 9, 2003 - source: BWCS
The industry body set up to promote CDMA mobile systems has spoken out
to defend the technology from those that say it is under threat from WiFi
networks. (CDG) has produced a white paper entitled ‘CDMA2000 & WiFi:
Making a Business Case for Interoperability’ which says that the two technologies
will coexist rather than compete.
Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG, says: “The data capabilities
of WiFi and hotspot services are often compared to those of CDMA2000.
But, WiFi’s shortcomings in key areas such as coverage and security mean
that it will remain a niche-technology – albeit a useful one. WiFi could
augment CDMA2000 systems, but it is not a substitute for the services
CDMA2000 provides.”
The CDG’s paper says that WiFi and CDMA2000 do not differ greatly in
the transmission speeds they achieve. The organisation finds that W-LAN
hotspots connected via T1 backhaul deliver similar end-user speeds to
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO systems, while hotspots using DSL connections provide
similar connectivity to CDMA2000 1x mobile networks. Several US operators,
including Verizon Wireless and Sprint, have already begun offering WiFi
services alongside their CDMA2000 mobile offerings.
