Siemens, which uses Motorola 3G mobile phone technology, unveiled its latest 3G handset today in Vienna. The U15 is Siemens' second 3G phone and is capable of videotelephony, music streaming and video recording.
According to Rudi Lamprecht, a member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG, 1.3 million users are using 3G networks built by the company.
"With 1.3 million users today on the 3G networks we have built, we're the world's most successful equipment supplier for next-generation mobile communication."
The U15 is a dual-mode handset that can be used on GSM networks. It features two integrated cameras with zoom, a high-resolution colour display, 64 megabytes of internal memory, Java, Bluetooth and a MP3 player. Unlike previous bulky 3G handsets the U15 has the appearance of a standard mobile phone. The mobile handset could be available in 16 countries as early as next month.
Lamprecht also announced the results of a European consumer survey showing strong interest in 3G.
"According to our forecasts, every mobile handset in Europe will be 3G capable by 2010. We anticipate that there will be some 40 million users in 2005 and that the 100-million mark will be reached by year-end 2006."
