Hutchison cuts back 3G commitment

October 9, 2003 - source: BWCS

UK Greenfield mobile operator Huchison 3 is to scale back its network commitment. The company which recently became the first operator in the UK to launch next generation W-CDMA mobile telephone services has agreed with Crown Castle to cut back the number of base stations it is committed to lease space on.

The original agreement between the Hong-Kong-owned Hutchison and the tower management company was that 3 would rent space on 4,000 base stations over a four year period. Hutchison has negotiated this pledge down to only 1,350.

The agreement had called for Hutchison to lease space on 1,000 extra base stations every year between 2001 and 2004. The operator will still pay rental for 25 years on the sites it has agreed to use, with an option to increase this number, if necessary. Crown Castle will remain 3’s preferred site provider in the UK. Hutchison has also reportedly modified its site agreement with BT, which will no longer be providing any space on its base stations to the upstart mobile company.
