DoCoMo Chief Predicts Ten Year Wait for Widespread 3G
October 14, 2003 - source: BWCS
3G will not be widely used for another ten years, according to DoCoMo
head, Keiji Tachikawa. Speaking at the current industry jamboree in Geneva,
Tachikawa used the occasion to pour cold water on any residue optimism
over 3G that may have been lurking in the building.
The DoCoMo CEO pointed to the broken pledges of European and Asian operators
which had promised a 3G service by the end of 2003, but had showed little
sign of delivering. Banging the company drum, Tachikawa, reported that
interest in second generation technology including i-mode services remained
strong. He reported that Italy will soon launch i-mode services, joining
Germany, France, Spain and Taiwan on the roster of i-mode markets.
While the spread of 3G services would take another ten years, Tachikawa,
reported that his company, at least, would be ready with 4th generation
mobile technology within that timeframe. NTT DoCoMo will, he said, produce
4G handsets within ten years. These will he said, offer mobile data transmission
speeds up to 10 times faster than those currently offered by 3G phones.
