LG Electronics said it is aiming to be the top supplier of next generation 3G mobile phones and double its 2 percent share in the GSM market.
The South Korean company is a major player in the CDMA market with it main presence in Asia and the Americas. It entered the GSM market last year and hoping to repeat its success in CDMA in the US, where it has 30 percent share of the market.
LG has started selling GSM handsets to global operators including Vodafone in the UK and Germany's T-Mobile. The firm is also planning to supply a camera mobile handset for Vodafone's Live service.
Chris Ho Yi, vice president for LG's GSM marketing, said LG is aiming to be a dominant global 3G handset supplier.
"LG strongly believes we should be the number one player in 3G."
The company is to supply handsets to several 3G operators in Europe when their service goes live next year. LG is coming up with new designs for 3G handsets and will also take the approach of designing products to the specifications of mobile operators.
Future LG handsets would be installed with Microsoft's Windows Mobile software in the most expensive phones and Symbian software in mid-priced models, Yi said. LG is looking to introduce their first model late next year based on Symbian software.
