Danish 3G Launch Hits Snags

October 16, 2003 - source: BWCS

The Danish subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa’s UMTS mobile operator ‘3’ has reported problems following the recent launch of its 3G networks. 3 Denmark is reporting that users are experiencing dropped calls when they move out of its 3G network coverage. The company has a GSM roaming agreement with Denmark’s largest 2G mobile operator, TDC, which should mean that calls are transferred seamlessly between 3’s UMTS network and TDC’s GSM system. However, the company says that the handover is not working and customers are losing their connection.

The telco says that engineers from 3 and TDC are working to resolve the glitch, which has already surfaced in other 3G launches around the world. 3 launched its 3G services in Denmark on Monday, with networks covering around 45% of the population. Hutchison’s 3G subsidiaries in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Austria, Sweden and Australia have already introduced UMTS services in those markets, and the telco is also planning next-generation rollouts in Norway, Israel and its domestic market of Hong Kong.
