Vodafone to launch 3G when it is ready
October 16, 2003
Vodafone has not committed to a launch date for its 3G mobile phone service
but said it will only launch the service when it is ready.
The company is willing to spend big on developing 3G and ensure the service
runs as smoothly as possible when it arrives. It is spending £2 billion
a year on establishing a 3G mobile phone service.
Vodafone Chief Executive Officer Arun Sarin said, "We are fully committed
to 3G"
"We are investing a couple of billion pounds every year on 3G. We are
also investing much time and energy to make sure that the interoperability
between all vendors exists in handsets and infrastructure. We are addressing
the software and hardware needed to make sure that when we launch our
service, it works."
Vodafone will only launch the service if it can outperform today's 2.5G
technology and offer something special to customers otherwise customers
would have no reason for migrating to 3G.
Sarin believes 3G will change how consumers receive information, entertainment
and telephony services because it significantly increases voice capacity
and data rates.
