Telekom Malaysia and Huawei Launch 3G

October 21, 2003 - source: BWCS

Telekom Malaysia has implemented a soft launch of its pilot W-CDMA network in partnership with the Chinese vendor Huawei. The pilot network covers the centre of Kuala Lumpur and will be used to test voice, messaging, location-based and video phone services. Huawei has already made the first voice calls on the network and both companies state that there have been no technical problems.

Telekom Malaysia has announced plans to invest billions of Ringgit [1 Ringit = US$0.26] in developing its W-CDMA network and services. The telco has also enlisted Huawei to work with it on developing its 3G business plan and identifying winning applications to offer on its next-generation network.

The Malaysian government awarded two 3G licences via a beauty contest in August 2002. Although three blocs of spectrum were initially offered only two companies, Telekom Malaysia and UMTS Malaysia (backed by Maxis Communications) met its minimum 60% score for financial, technical and management expertise.
