Multi-Links selects Nortel Networks for CDMA2000 1X fixed wireless network
expansion
October 21, 2003
Nigeria's Multi-Links Telecommunications has selected Nortel Networks
to expand its next generation fixed wireless data network in Lagos and
to deploy new CDMA2000 1X fixed networks in Abuja and Kaduna. The expansion
is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2004.
This expansion will increase network capacity to accommodate more voice
and data calls in Lagos. It will also position Multi-Links to provide
wireless services to new markets in Abuja and Kaduna, which will be its
first deployments outside of Lagos. The network equipment will position
Multi-Links to drive new revenue opportunities with high-speed wireless
data and secure Internet services like mobile Web browsing and e-mail
access with attachments.
“This network expansion underlines our commitment to providing the highest
quality voice and data services to customers across Nigeria,” said C.
K. Ramani, chief executive officer, Multi-Links. “Nortel Networks has
worked closely with us on our network business model, and demonstrated
their ability to move quickly and to cost-effectively deploy the technology
we need to expand our services beyond Lagos.”
Multi-Links’ existing wireless network in Lagos, also deployed by Nortel
Networks, was launched in March 2003 as Africa’s first commercial CDMA
1X network.
”We are pleased to see the region’s leading operators, like Multi-Links,
turn to Nortel Networks CDMA2000 1X solutions to add capacity and bring
sophisticated new voice and data services to market,” said Michel Clement,
president, Nortel Networks France, Middle East and Africa. “The wireless
business model is an economical way to extend voice and Internet services
to new populations. In many cases, a wireless solution is less expensive
to implement in these kinds of regions than traditional wireline.”
