Telefónica Móvil Chile Claims Commercial EDGE
October 26, 2003 - source: BWCS
Telefónica Móvil in Chile has launched commercial services on its EDGE
(Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), system in the national capital,
Santiago and the city of Valparaiso. The company has loudly proclaimed
it the first such service in South America. It also marks the first time
that the Spanish-based parent company Telefónica Móviles has offered EDGE
services to any of its customers.
The equipment for the new network was supplied by Nokia. According to
a press statement from the Finnish vendor, the systems will allow the
Chilean operator to offer services at three times the normal data speeds
achieved on GPRS. This, both companies claim, will enable Telefónica Móvil
to offer a wide array of new services including multimedia messaging.
Under the terms of its agreement with the Chilean mobile operator, Nokia
is providing network equipment, implementation and integration services
as well as project managing the installation and launch. Telefónica Móvil
has almost two million mobile telephony customers in Chile.
