Hanoi Telecom to launch 3G mobile service

Vietnamese operator Hanoi Telecom expects to secure a licence to launch the first 3G mobile phone network in Vietnam by early-December 2004, reports Total Telecom citing Hanoi Telecom manager Tring Minh Hoa.

The firm already provides IDD, VoIP and fixed-line services, and will enter the mobile market with 3G services based on CDMA 20001x-EV-DO technology.

The 3G service will be operate in co-operation with Luxembourg-based Hutchison Telecommunications, pending approval of their USD 656 million contract by the Vietnamese govt.

Hanoi Telecom has also recently signed an agreement with CDMA technology specialist Qualcomm to establish a CDMA technology training centre, the first of its kind in SE Asia.

Qualcomm will make an initial USD 300,000 contribution to build the facility.
