Telefonica Moviles plans to extend coverage in Spain
October 27, 2004
Spanish mobile telephone operator Telefonica Moviles has announced a plan to extend coverage of 3G UMTS mobile phone networks to 40 per cent of the Spanish population by the end of the year, by initiating coverage for over 100 communities with populations of over 100,000. The company is carrying out a plan to invest a total of 1bn euros in launching 3G networks between 2003 and 2006.
Rival company Amena, meanwhile, plans to invest 1.1bn euros to the same end by the year 2008. Amena believes that 3G mobile phones will only become popular when handset prices drop to around 150 euros. Meanwhile, the Spanish secretary of state for telecommunications, Francisco Ros, called for telecoms firms to increase their spending on R&D.
