DoCoMo protects FOMA M1000 users with backup service

October 11, 2005

FusionOne, a provider of premium mobile services which help users protect, access and manage the personal content on their mobile phones, has announced plans to deliver mobile phone backup services to users of NTT DoCoMo's mopera U service and FOMA M1000 handsets manufactured by Motorola. The new service represents an important enhancement to NTT DoCoMo's mopera U offering, which provides mobile access to the Web via DoCoMo's 3G FOMA network.

Developed and hosted by FusionOne, the new Data Backup service automatically protects a FOMA M1000 user's address book, calendar, to-do list and notes against phone loss, damage or theft. It also eliminates the need to manually transfer this personal content when a phone is replaced or upgraded. Further, the Data Backup service includes a "self destruct" feature which allows users to remotely erase their personal content from a lost device.

"Most of NTT DoCoMo's FOMA M1000 subscribers are business users, so the addition of data backup to the growing list of mopera U services should enhance the way business subscribers use their mobile phones," said Kiyoshi Tokuhiro, NTT DoCoMo's Managing Director of Ubiquitous Services. When the service becomes available, NTT DoCoMo subscribers will access the Data Backup service through the mopera U menu on their handsets. After registering with the service, users can also access a Web-based portal from any PC to view, update or print their personal content. All changes are automatically synchronized back to the mobile phone. Since it will be part of the mopera U service, there will be no additional charge to subscribers.

The Data Backup service is based on the same Mighty Mobile Services Platform as FusionOne's MightyBackup and MightyPhone service offerings. "NTT DoCoMo is one of the top carriers worldwide, based on both its subscriber-base and leading-edge products and services, so it comes as no surprise that they would become one of the first carriers to offer mobile phone data backup services for their FOMA M1000 users," said Richard Onyon, CEO of FusionOne. "The information inside a handset -- whether it be address book and calendar content today, or images, ringtones, or other data tomorrow -- is usually the most important and irreplaceable part of a mobile phone, so the Data Backup service should be of great use to mopera U users."
