Lucent deploy 3G for public safety and homeland security communities

October 12, 2005

Aloha Partners LP and Lucent Technologies announced a Public Safety demonstration in Phoenix using Aloha Partners 700 MHz spectrum and Lucent's 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO equipment. The two companies are teaming up to provide next-generation services for Phoenixs Fire Department and Bureau for Homeland Defense in an innovative example of a private-public cooperative effort. The demonstration is scheduled to launch in early 2006.

Aloha Partners, the largest owner of 700 MHz spectrum in the United States, will use its licensed spectrum in Phoenix to deploy the network. The demonstration will enable Aloha to offer first responders high-quality, high-speed mobile data services at speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second. The CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network technology, operating at 700 MHz, will allow first responders to access and share multimedia data, images, video, and other critical information to help them better serve the citizens in the Phoenix area.

I am pleased that the Phoenix Fire Department and Homeland Defense Bureau will be able to participate in this pilot program. A successful public safety pilot program deployed in the 700 MHz band will only reinforce the urgency for the TV broadcasters to vacate this spectrum as soon as possible, said Senator John McCain. To be effective in the field, first responders nationwide need to have access to advanced technologies that include mobile data and video streaming and that cannot happen as long as the broadcasters continue to use this spectrum band.

"We believe its critical for public safety to continuously evaluate the most advanced technologies available if it is going to be able to meet the increasingly complex communications challenges of the future," said Nate White, Phoenix Fire Department Technical Services Division Chief.

Lucent will supply its Flexent CDMA2000 base stations and Flexent Mobility Server to provide an open IP interface to the Aloha Partners data network. Crown Castle USA Inc., a subsidiary of Crown Castle International has been selected by Aloha Partners to help design, deploy, and manage the network build out.

"Lucent is particularly delighted to be showcasing the value of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO in Phoenix because the citys first responders have always been on the leading edge of technology adoption to enhance their mission capabilities," said Mike Iandolo, Mobility Access Solutions vice president and general manager for Lucent Technologies. "We strongly support the governments efforts to leverage the advances in commercial technologies to the benefit of the overall Homeland Security mission."
