China Mobile Figures Continue to Soar

October 27, 2005 - source: BWCS

There are now 377 million mobile phone users in China, according to government figures released today. As the debate over 3G standards in the country rumbles on, the number of second generation mobile customers continues to rise with 29 in every 100 Chinese citizens now owning a mobile phone.

This figure marks an increase of 7.7% since June of this year and an impressive rise of 23.6% compared to June 2004. China has been the world's largest single mobile market since August 2003, when the government reported that there were 250 million mobile users in the country.

The figures from the Ministry of Information Industry were reported today on the official Xinhua News Agency. According to the government, last month Chinese mobile users sent a staggering 218.5 billion text messages, a growth of 40.2% year on year. China had some 345 million fixed line connections at the end of September.
