Kyocera Introduces 2200 Series of 3G Handsetsdate: September 11, 2001 Kyocera Wireless today introduced its new line of 3G wireless phones, the Kyocera 2200 series, at the CTIA Wireless IT show in San Diego. The Kyocera 2235 and 2255 handsets employ CDMA 2000 1X, an advanced packet-data technology that offers carriers a significant increase in network voice capacity. As carriers upgrade their data networks, the technology also gives them the capability to offer high-speed data rates of up to 153 kilobits per second and the ability to offer a wide variety of very compelling value-added services in order to entice new subscribers and reduce churn. The phones are expected to reach the consumer market in Q4 and will be among the first 3G handsets in North America. Kyocera Wireless Corp. is a leader in the wireless industry's evolution toward 3G, having provided prototype 1X handsets and actively participating in trials of 3G networks for more than a year with carriers and infrastructure manufacturers. Leading infrastructure providers look straight to Kyocera for handsets when they are implementing new features in network equipment, and the industry sees our products as the technology gold standard in CDMA2000 1X, said Stanley Scheufler corporate vice president of marketing and product management at Kyocera Wireless Corp. "Our new 2200 series of phones allows carriers to increase the capacity on, and thus the revenues from, their existing networks. As carriers make the evolution to 3G technology, we're committed to providing handsets that meet their needs." The Kyocera 2235 and 2255 handsets will be distinguished by a compact, lightweight ergonomic design, which is comfortable to hold and easy to use. The 2255 also features an attractive Brilliant Blue backlit display and keypad. Both are trimode digital phones, operating on CDMA PCS (1900 MHz), CDMA cellular (800 MHz) and analog cellular networks. Enhanced features include Internet access, two-way short messaging, voice-activated dialing, four games, predictive text entry, and productivity tools including voice memo, calculator, contact directory, alarm clock, and stopwatch. The phones measure approximately 4.72 in. x 1.89 in. x .95 in. (12 cm x 4.8 cm x 2.4 cm), weigh approximately 4.34 ounces (123 grams), and provide up to 3.8 hours of talk time and up to 6 days of standby time in digital mode. Kyocera Wireless Corp. is demonstrating its 2235 and 2255 handsets at the CTIA Wireless IT trade show, which runs through September 13 at the San Diego Convention Center. Prices for the phones will be set by wireless carriers.
