Deputy Dir said WCDMA is the Choice in Chinadate: September 12, 2001 It has been reported in the press domestic Chinese telecoms equipment vendor Datang and its German counterpart Siemens have a tough assignment promoting their jointly developed 3G technology of the TD-SCDMA standard. The technology is badly positioned compared with the other two standards and both spent billions dollars on it. We've bet our future on it, said Zhou Huan, president of Datang. TD-SCDMA is one of the three choices for Chinese mobile carriers in the coming 3G age. TD-SCDMA makes better use of the limited available spectrum frequency than the other standards, the US-based CDMA2000 and Europe-based WCDMA. But the other two standards are regarded by most industry insiders as more mature and are likely to capture a larger market share than the locally invented TD-SCDMA. In terms of utilizing the present network resources, WCDMA is the most preferred choice by China Mobile, the country's dominant carrier that controls over 70% of the total 160 million users. Presently in its 2G age, China has constructed the world's biggest GSM network. It is necessary to protect the nation's tremendous investment in 2G construction, said Han Xia, deputy director general of the Telecom Management Bureau at the Ministry of Information Industry (MII). Han made the comments at last week's First International TD-SCDMA Summit, which attracted policy-makers, mobile carriers and equipment vendors. 3G construction should make full use of the present GSM network and maintain the continuity of the service, said Han. The adoption of the 3G standard in China should be based on the demand in the market, she added.
