Kyocera Wireless Announces CDMA2000 1X Module Product Linedate: September 12, 2001 Kyocera Wireless, a provider of CDMA wireless handsets, today announced a new line of CDMA2000 1X wireless modules. The new product line is intended to be both backward - and forward-compatible with existing and future CDMA networks. According to Strategy Analytics, the global wireless data and computing device market opportunity will grow from just over $70 billion in 2000 to $175 billion in 2005. Kyocera's wireless module allows OEMs to integrate CDMA2000 1X voice and data capabilities into a wide range of products, including PDAs, laptop and handheld computers, and other consumer electronics devices. Automotive telematics, remote metering, wireless point-of-sale terminals and vehicle tracking, are also likely applications for this device. The Kyocera CDMA2000 1X module is based on the Qualcomm MSM 5100 chipset, making the module compatible with existing IS-95A/B CDMA networks as well as future CDMA2000 1X networks. The module's trimode capability (CDMA PCS 1900 MHz, CDMA digital 800 MHz and AMPS 800 MHz) provides seamless coverage using existing wireless networks. In addition, the Kyocera module can support IS-2000 data rates of up to 153 kbps and position location technology. A Module Developers Kit and programming tools to support integration of wireless capability into OEM products and systems will be available for purchase by module customers. Kyocera Wireless Corp. is willing to work with partners to customize modules with ruggedized components or enhanced feature sets, such as MP3, video, and other emerging technologies, for specialized applications. Other features supported by the Kyocera CDMA2000 1X module include two-way and broadcast Short Messaging Service capabilities; simple and mobile IP; Voice Recognition; and support for both 13k QCELP and EVRC vocoders.
