Lattice makes fibre-optic dealdate: September 15, 2001 186k, the recently formed telecoms business of Lattice Group, news emerged that it had won a multi-million pound contract with a UK 3G mobile phone operator. A major unnamed UK 3G operator will use 186K's fibre-optic cables in a deal Lattice chief executive Phil Nolan said was worth tens of millions of pounds and is the first customer to its 186K telecom network. Lattice Group is the holding company for the group of businesses recently demerged from BG Group plc. Lattice Group comprises Transco, the owner, operator and developer of the substantial majority of UK's gas transportation system, and other businesses, including telecommunications. 186k is a newly formed Lattice Group company, set up to provide fibre optic infrastructure and related services. As a first stage, 186k is investing some £350 million in the construction of a state-of-the-art backbone fibre optic network connecting 12 major centres of demand, and in the provision of transmission, managed data services and IP services across Britain.
