Adax Rolls Out Intelligent ATM Controller for 3G

date: September 17, 2001

Adax, makers of wide area communications and signaling infrastructure, has introduced a new range of ATM controllers with enhanced functionality, including Ethernet capabilities for LAN access to the Internet and VPNs, and a new routing controller that supports 64 Virtual Circuits for signaling and 64K VCs for content traffic. Together with the SCTP/T software already available in existing ATM cards, the new ADAX ATM Plus controllers will allow customers to build powerful gateway interfaces that enable not only convergence between 3G networks and the Internet, but telco-grade reliability as well.

The ADAX ATM solution is a particularly powerful and cost-effective one. The new routing controller provides cell switching and VPI/VCI mapping capability, thereby eliminates the need for an external switch to separate signaling from content traffic and reduces equipment footprint. At the same time, high volume processing is assured with the 64 VCs provided for signaling and 64K VCs for content traffic over ATM-OC3/STM-1/STS-3c. A high-speed on-board RISC processor handles demanding multi-media telecom applications without depleting the resources of the host CPU. In a test configuration with a 500 MHz single board computer, the ATM Plus processed 2,500 256 byte frames per second with less than 40% CPU utilization. This represents a performance enhancement of up to 50% compared with similar products.

"We have in the Adax ATM Plus all the capabilities for OEMs and Integrators to usher in Convergence between 3G, PSTN and IP," commented Barry Zuckerman, Ph.D., President of Adax Inc. "The benefits to customers are enormous and include high volume traffic, low host CPU usage, a level of reliability and signaling robustness found only in traditional ATM and SS7 network, Internet and VPN access for LAN, and the processing capability for demanding mixed media telecom applications."

The new ADAX ATM Plus controller, available in PCI and CompactPCI form factors, complements the established Adax Protocol Controller and Adax Protocol Software product lines. Together, they enable Integrators and OEMs to build high performance, totally scalable systems with any mix of ATM, SCTP, Frame Relay, X.25 and SS7 for delivering multi-media content via IP and PSTN based networks for 3G in general, and UMTS in particular.
