Sprint to Deploy Java on Sprint PCS Phones with Launch of 3G Network in Mid 2002date: September 18, 2001 Sprint PCS, today announced it will deploy Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) on Sprint PCS Phones when it launches the Sprint PCS 3G 1X network nationwide in mid 2002. Deploying applications using the J2ME platform will enable Sprint PCS to enhance the consumer experience by enabling more graphical and fun personalized interactive services for wireless devices. "With Sprint PCS' clear path to 3G, packet-switched technology, we have the opportunity to bring a variety of personalized applications to our customers using J2ME technology," said John Yuzdepski, vice president and general manager of sprintPCS.com. A key attribute to incorporating J2ME technology into a wireless device is that it enables consumers to continually upgrade the applications on a device once it has been purchased. Since J2ME is an industry standard, the same software and applications can work on a variety of different devices. "As a leading U.S. operator delivering data services, Sprint PCS' commitment to deploy Java technology-based services for its 3G network further demonstrates that Java technology is a defacto standard across different networks, including CDMA," said Rich Green, vice president and general manager, Java and XML software for Sun Microsystems.
