KDDI Delays Network Launch datedate: September 19, 2001 KDDI will likely postpone to next year the launch of its 3G mobile phone service, currently slated for this autumn, due to delayed shipments of handsets by manufacturers, company officials said late Tuesday, Kyodo News reported. A spokesman for KDDI said the move is not a delay, as the original plan to begin offering the service in the three major cities of Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo in the autumn "was just a target." "We now plan to offer the service in the second half of the current fiscal year . . ." the spokesman said, according to Kyodo. Industry analysts said KDDI's move underlines the increasingly cautious stance among telecom carriers over launching high-speed services amid lingering problems such as unreliable handsets and incomplete systems for transmitting images and music data and connections for international calls. The postponement of the launch could lead other carriers to delay their own 3G launches.
