Denmark Awards Four Licencesdate: September 20, 2001 The Danish Telecommunications Board said on Thursday it awarded four licences for new mobile phone services at a surprisingly high price of $118 million each. The winners of the auction were Danish telecoms operator TDC , Sweden's Telia , France Telecom-owned Orange and HI3G. The licence price was almost double the minimum price of 500 million crowns, which surprised analysts. "Hi3G will bring a strong 3G offering to the Danish market. We are focused only on the new technology and are convinced that the third generation mobile technology will influence a basic change in how we communicate. By combining advanced data services with mobility 3G creates a new medium, to be used for work and leisure", says Chris Bannister, Hi3G's CEO. "We are delighted to be granted the licence, which is in line with our Nordic strategy. It gives us the opportunity to continue our strong growth in the Nordic mobile market. We will also be able to take advantage of a common Nordic platform when we are developing our new UMTS services", says Kenneth Karlberg, Senior Executive Vice President Telia AB and head of business area Mobile. Five bids were received at the auction. The loser in the tender, Europe's first sealed bid auction for 3G licences, was Norway's Telenor . The licences cover establishment and operation of 3G mobile networks in the following frequency bands: 1900-1980 MHz, 2020-2025 MHz and 2110-2170 MHz.
