Fujitsu to Develop TD-SCDMA Technologydate: September 22, 2001 Japan's Fujitsu. will develop TD-SCDMA cellphone networks in China, using a standard originally developed by a Chinese firm, a Japanese daily reported. The Saturday edition of Nihon Keizai Shimbun said the electronics manufacturer has agreed with South China University of Technology to develop the networks. Fujitsu expects to finalize the systems framework by summer of 2002, it said. According to the daily, Fujitsu sources said the Chinese government would likely adopt the networks using the Time Division - Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA) standard, which is recognized internationally as compatible with other 3G wireless phones. The company is in talks with a couple of telecommunications manufacturers in China about making the phones in the country, the daily added. TD-SCDMA is the 3G standard officially recognized by 3GPP (3G Partnership Project). Its development for the Chinese market, driven jointly by the China Academy for Telecommunications Technology (CATT) and Siemens, started in 1998. Being a GSM-based standard, it will allow direct migration toward 3rd generation mobile communication. The resulting cost savings and possibility of early introduction compared to other 3G standards make TD-SCDMA interesting not only for the Chinese market but also as a Chinese export product.
