Vodafone Chief Doubts DoCoMo Launch Datedate: September 26, 2001 The chief executive of Vodafone, Chris Gent, stated the tension surrounding 3G mobile phone services on Wednesday when he questioned DoCoMo's decision to launch 3G services before the standard was complete and emphasised that DoCoMo's launch was not likely to be "fully commercial". "We have always been of the view that... there are aspects of (the standard) which are not agreed between all the participating (members)," Mr Gent said. Speaking just days before DoCoMo becomes the first in the world to offer commercial services using the advanced WCDMA 3G mobile phone standard, Mr Gent emphasised that a successful launch by DoCoMo would be good for industry sentiment. "Three cheers for DoCoMo if they manage to get the service open next month," he said. "(But) I think it's unlikely to be a full commercial service." DoCoMo announced on Tuesday it will begin selling handsets that are compatible with its 3G FOMA mobile communication service from October 1, 2001. NTT DoCoMo previously said that it would launch fully commercialized FOMA service from the same date.
