Toshiba Focus on Home Marketdate: September 27, 2001 Toshiba will slow down development of 3G mobile phones for Europe as global economic weakness threatens the timeline for introduction of 3G rollouts, the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun business newspaper said. Instead, Toshiba will focus on supplying Japan's home market such as DoCoMo, the paper said. No one at the company was available for comment. The newspaper said Toshiba had planned to transfer 100 researchers to Siemens AG to work on the introduction of dual-mode handsets in late 2002 that would work under both 3G and GSM networks. But Toshiba, which formed an alliance with the German company in November to develop and market 3G handsets, is reviewing its plans as launch of 3G services has been delayed by many European carriers, the paper said. Toshiba also halved its planned handset shipments to the United States for the year to next March to three million units, the paper said.
