M1 Closes Last CDMA Network for 3G Servicesdate: September 27, 2001 Singapore's MobileOne (M1) will shut down its CDMA network on 30 September 2001 as scheduled; after having successfully moved its more than 50,000 CDMA customers to its GSM network. M1 decided to shut down the CDMA network as its spectrum has been earmarked for 3G services. The migration exercise, which began on 24 July 2001, saw long queues of CDMA customers at the registration centre in the initial days, all eager to enjoy the benefits of the attractive conversion package. In addition to a free GSM mobile phone, customers could retain their CDMA mobile numbers as well as their very economical CDMA subscription and airtime rates. M1 launched Singapore’s only CDMA network on 1 June 1998. Known for its high voice quality and very affordable airtime rates, the network has to be removed as the radio spectrum it occupies is earmarked for WCDMA 3G services. Thanking CDMA customers for their co-operation and understanding during the migration exercise, Neil Montefiore, Chief Executive Officer of M1 said: "It was a massive effort that required detailed planning and good co-ordination and that helped us cope with the overwhelming response from our customers in the first few days." In Nov 00, M1 was working with Nokia in the construction of GSM1800 network to replace all the CDMA system to position itself for the 3G future.
