DoCoMo Deploys IONA e-Business Platform for FOMA

date: September 27, 2001

IONA, a e-Business Platform provider for Total Business Integration, today announced that NTT DoCoMo has adopted the IONA e-Business Platform as the distributed computing infrastructure and application server core for DoCoMo's next-generation network management system. This system is being deployed in Japan as part of the rollout of the world's first 3G mobile telecommunications service, Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access (FOMA).

With the inauguration of FOMA, DoCoMo is proceeding with construction of a network usage management system serving as the intelligence center in a new infrastructure for the world's most advanced mobile-handset communications. IONA's partner in helping NTT DoCoMo achieve this milestone is NEC Corporation, which proposed a solution architecture and has been providing ongoing services and support in system development and integration via a dedicated FOMA-focused specialist team.

In scale and scope, FOMA's intelligence core is the largest of its kind and features significant integrated management functionality.

The IONA e-Business Platform has been adopted to address the FOMA network management system's need for robust, component-based communication functionality. As it has in numerous other telecommunications solutions across the globe, the IONA e-Business Platform provides the NTT DoCoMo FOMA service management infrastructure with the platform for highly performant network equipment monitoring, network congestion monitoring, and traffic management facilities. In implementation terms, the IONA e-Business Platform has enabled a clear standardization of communications within the FOMA system and a corresponding minimization of development effort.
