France Telecom interested in Ireland
September 4, 2002
France Telecom unit Orange said today it is still interested in
applying for the vacant A licence after today's deadline for Irish
3G licences.
Before today's 12pm application deadline three companies, mmO2,
Vodafone and Hutchison Whampoa had applied for licences.
The company said it did not submit an application because talks
over a joint bid between it and the Electricity Supply Board (ESB)
broke down last week and it was not ready to "go it alone", a spokesperson
at Orange UK told the press.
Orange said it believes the Irish government, which sought four
operators for the one A and three B licences, will invite further
applications at later date, in line with the ongoing French UMTS
award process which also attracted less candidates than places available.
