Vodafone takes Ireland licence
September 9, 2002
Vodafone Ireland said on Monday it had taken up a licence for advanced
3G mobile telephone services in Ireland.
"We have decided that the right decision for our business, our
customers, our employees and partners is to accept the 'B' licence
that has been offered to us," Vodafone Ireland Chief Executive Paul
Donovan said.
The "B" category licence requires 33 percent coverage of Ireland's
3.8 million population by 2006 and 53 percent within 10 years.
The decision came after Vodafone asked for and was granted a month's
extension from the original acceptance deadline of August 14.
Under terms of the deal with Ireland's Office of the Director of
Telecommunications Regulation (ODTR), Vodafone made a 44 million
euro ($43.22 million) downpayment on the licence, and must pay a
total of 110 million euros over 10 years, a spokeswoman said.
