No 3G Plans in Hungary
September 9, 2002 - source: BWCS
The Hungarian government has no plans to sell off next-generation
UMTS licences in the near future according to reports from local
press. Hungarian newspaper Nepszabadsag, citing the country’s IT
and telecoms minister, says that neither phone companies nor consumers
are ready for 3G services. The news follows a series of delays to
planned 3G launches in Western Europe.
The Hungarian government had intended to sell off a number of next-generation
concessions last year but postponed the auction until market conditions
were more favourable. The authorities were expecting to raise up
to HUF200 billion (US$805 million) from the 2001 sale, but with
the current lack of enthusiasm for 3G services in Western Europe
it now appears unlikely that an auction in Hungary would raise anything
near that amount. The country is currently home to three GSM operators,
Westel, Pannon and Vodafone, which between them had more than 5.5
million customers at the end of June.
