CDMA2000 Continues to Expand in Latin America
September 9, 2002
The CDMA Development Group (CDG) reported that SMARTCOM PCS is
the latest service provider to deploy CDMA2000 1X in Latin America.
The new 3G-enabled network will allow the operator to offer always
on high-speed data services and nearly double network capacity.
"The CDG congratulates SMARTCOM PCS on the launch of its 3G CDMA2000
network," said Perry LaForge, executive director for the CDG.
"SMARTCOM PCS' strategy is to be the leader in providing high-speed
wireless Internet services in Chile," said Jaime Gros, general manager
for SMARTCOM PCS. "With CDMA2000, we are able to deploy these services
quickly and with relatively small capital investment."
CDMA2000 is the only 3G technology available in Latin America today.
In addition to SMARTCOM PCS, three other Latin American operators
have launched CDMA2000 networks, including Centennial de Puerto
Rico, and Telefonica Celular and Telesp Celular in Brazil. Nine
other operators are scheduled to commercially deploy CDMA2000 throughout
the region this year.
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, commercially deployed by KT Freetel and SK Telecom
in Korea, allows mobile users to experience the mobile Internet
and reach multimedia applications at data speeds up to 2.4 Mbps.
