Ericsson said too many players
September 10, 2002
Ericsson said the 3G market was overcrowded, and predicted that
even the largest markets could not support more than four 3G spectrum
licence holders, the Financial Times reported, citing Thorbjörn
Nilsson, head of marketing and strategy.
Mr Nilsson said that his company does not see the delay of 3G telecommunications
and the expected shake-out as a failure, but it is more a precondition
for its eventual success.
"We believe that in the larger markets there will be four operators,
and in the smaller ones there will be fewer," he said.
To reach this stage there should remain only four operators with
a next generation telecom licence in the larger markets, while there
will be fewer in the smaller, he said.
"This is a retail business and like any retail business it does
not really support a lot of players in the market," Mr Nilsson said.
He questioned whether any operator would be able to survive with
a share of less than 10 per cent of their home market.
