2004 rollout for Sunday's 3G network
September 15, 2002
 |
Sunday may not rollout 3G on
time. |
Sunday Communications, a Hong Kong mobile operator, say it plans
to rollout their 3G network in 2004. The 3G mobile license holder
expects its network to cost around HK$1.6 billion to build. But
the cost may fall by 20 percent as equipment costs get cheaper.
Sunday will focus their revenue growth through the use of tailor
made content services.
At the beginning of this year, Sunday along with the Shell Group
conducted a joint pilot project to operator as a mobile virtual
network operator (MVNO). The project, which concluded in August,
confirmed the Group's belief that MVNO have limited potential. They
express owning a 3G license is key to the future success of 3G in
the Hong Kong market.
Sunday has already paid the first five years of 3G license fees.
There is doubt as to whether Sunday will be able to fund 3G investments,
as the Hong Kong cellular market is shrinking and unprofitable.
A Hong Kong newspaper stated that Sunday would not be able to rollout
their 3G network until 2005. Sunday's net debt amounted to HK$597
and will increase by the end of 2002 for completion of the final
phase to their 2.5G network. It may hamper their ability to rollout
3G on time.
