Indonesian operators should not be force to join the 3G race
September 17, 2002
The Indonesian government should not force cellular phone operators
to adopt 3G cellular technology as its use in developed nations
has only grown slowly, an executive said.
"Also, the government must allocate a special frequency for the
3G technology, whilst it must entrust the operation of 3G technology
to cellular phone operators," said, M. Suwarno, vice chairman of
the Asia Pacific Telecommunity IMT 2000 Forum
He said the use of 3G technology could cost a cellular phone operator
tens of millions of US dollars, excluding frequency allocation costs
and licence fees.
"Cellular phone operators must make careful calculations before
deciding to use 3G technology, particularly with respect to the
interests of subscribers," he said.
He said cellular phone operators would have to make different preparations
to use 3G technology.
Although 3G technology had good prospects, the development of 3G
technology would not grow as fast as cellular phone operators would
wish because it did not attract many subscribers, even in developed
nations within the Asian and Pacific region, he said.
