South African operators wise not to invest in 3G so soon

September 17, 2002

South Africa's cellular network operators are looking increasingly wise in their decisions not to invest in 3G technologies and there are no signs of the Government issuing 3G license until mid-2003.

A recent report by the South African telecommunication department suggested while more people are gaining the ability to access the internet on their cellphones in the world, few are actually bothering. In the last six months, the number of users whose cellphones could access the internet rose by 25%, but actual usage fell by 20%.

That is bad news for network operators which have invested heavily in 3G technologies in the hope that video, text, internet browsing and location-specific services will prove a must-have for the average user.

In South Africa, MTN, Vodacom and Cell C have been more circumspect, saying the demand in this country is mainly for basic voice services so investing in 3G would be unjustified.

They believe the intermediate technology, GPRS, will be an adequate substitute at a far less cost.

GPRS offers faster internet access than a standard GSM connection. It can also handle multi-media messaging and mobile payments, which seem likely to become the two most commonly used services even over a 3G network.
