Fujitsu Delivers New IMT-2000 Base Stations with Four Times Data Capacity for NTT DoCoMo's 3G Network

September 19, 2002

Fujitsu announced it has begun providing new base transceiver station equipment for NTT DoCoMo's IMT-2000 3G mobile communications network since July 11. The new base stations, which have the capacity to handle more than 2,880 channels (*1), or quadruple the capacity of existing equipment, were developed jointly by Fujitsu, Hitachi Kokusai Electric and NTT DoCoMo.

The new base station equipment uses a high-speed channel signal processor and a high-efficiency transmitter amplifier built with new distortion-compensation technology developed by Fujitsu and Fujitsu Laboratories, announced September 5. These components are highly compact and enable a dramatic reduction in power consumption. As a result, the equipment achieves four times the channel capacity with the same amount of power and space requirements as previous models.

The new equipment also offers the operating advantage of greater flexibility in scaling the number of channels in accordance with increases in demand. In addition to accommodating voice communications, it provides ample channels for 384-Kbps high-speed packet data transmission.

Fujitsu has developed and commercialized base transceiver station equipment for NTT DoCoMo from the earliest stages. As the use of high-speed packet transmission for the Internet and other applications has become widespread in mobile environments, Fujitsu has met the evolving needs of the market by developing equipment that can handle growing capacity requirements.

Fujitsu's new base transceiver station equipment boasts the following special advantages:

1. High-density/ high capacity - Advanced semiconductor and high-speed channel signal-processing technologies enable four times the channel capacity in the same size as previous models.

2. Low power consumption - The development of a high-efficiency transmitter amplifier using new distortion-compensation technology based on the digital pre-distortion method makes the new equipment highly energy efficient, with power consumption on par with previous models.

3. Superior scalability - Whether for suburban areas with light traffic or urban areas with heavy traffic, the number of channels can be easily expanded as needed, keeping initial investment costs down.
