Three goes ahead with 3G launch date
September 23, 2002
Hutchison Whampoa's third-generation mobile phone division, 3,
is to go ahead with its planned October launch in the U.K., where
technical hitches have caused delays for other rivals, according
to the Financial Mail on Sunday.
Vodafone has said its 3G system won't be available until the middle
of 2003 or so, while other operators, including Orange and mmo2,
have also slowed down scheduled roll outs.
On July, Hutchison Whampoa has said that it does expect that calls
will be dropped on occasions, but that it's network would be no
different to any 2G network in that regard. A UK newspaper had said
that Hutchison's 3G networks would suffer excessive dropped calls
until the middle of next year.
A networks would commence trials with around 10,000 subscribers
from October, a month later than originally expected. A spokes person
from Hutchison Whampoa said that the company expects to launch with
3,500 cell sites in the UK market, and about 2,200 cell sites in
Italy.
