NTT DoCoMo to extent its video services to FOMA
September 24, 2002
NTT DoCoMo announced today that it would introduce three new services
to its 'M-Stage' video distribution service. The three services
are 'M-Stage V-Live', 'M-Stage Book' and 'M-Stage Visual Net'. They
hope the effort will attract PDA users to its mobile services.
The 'M-Stage V-Live' service is a one-to-many video streaming service
which allows users to download live and archived video clips to
their PDAs via a PHS (personal handyphone system) terminal. The
service is expected to be available via its 3G FOMA handsets in
spring.
DoCoMo will use its 'infogate', PDA oriented portal site, to provide
open and closed content. Open content will include news and music
and available to all 'M-Stage V-Live' subscribers. While closed
content is available exclusively to customers of content providers
or corporate users. Examples of this content include English conversation
lessons, security service and investor relation tools.
The 'M-Stage Book' service allows e-books and articles to be transmitted
to PDAs and PCs via PHS and 3G terminals. Users will be able to
search, purchase and download the content.
The final service, 'M-Stage Visual Net', is one of the most anticipated
services. It allows up to eight subscribers to take part in mobile
videoconferencing via 3G handsets with video cameras.
A fee of 100 Yen per month for each service is expected. PHS transmissions
will incur a fee of 15 Yen per minute and certain contents maybe
charge extra fees.
DoCoMo was the first operator to launch 3G service back in October
2001 called FOMA as the world's first 3G mobile service based on
W-CDMA.
