Alcatel to launch seven new labs
September 24, 2002
The French communications equipment makers, Alcatel, said it plans
to build seven new labs in Asia-Pacific and Europe. The labs, called
3G Reality Centres, will allow developers to create new GPRS and
3G services, mainly aimed at communications, entertainment and business
segments.
Alcatel already has five such labs and the new labs will be situated
in Japan, Korea, Australia, Germany, France, Italy and Germany and
will be ready by the middle of 2003. Each lab will be equipped with
live 3G networks and engineering expertise.
Alcatel will hope to attract telecomm operators to the labs where
it will showcase its GPRS and 3G products and services to.
John Lipp, Alcatel Asia-Pacific's director of business development
for mobile Internet, said, "Of course we hope to generate positive
energy around our infrastructure and applications."
Lim Seng Jin, Alcatel's Asia-Pacific spokesperson, said the firm
is taking a "long-term view" on its 3G development. "Our network
of 3G centres is necessary as we are confident that mobile broadband
will be a key driver of telecommunications services in the future,"
he said.
