MobilCom halts 3G rollout
September 28, 2002
Troubled German telecom firm MobilCom said on Friday that it would
delay the rollout of its 3G network in Germany and cut 1,850 jobs.
The firm was on the brink of bankruptcy earlier this month but the
government came to its aid with a $390 million rescue package, just
before the elections.
The mess is due to the cutting of funds by France Telecom, which
holds a 28.5 stake in MobilCom, to MobilCom. The cause of the strife
is MobilCom's ambitious plans for next generation mobile services.
France Telecom itself has debt problems of its own.
MobilCom said would keep its license and does not plan to sell
it. Under the current obligations, MobilCom has to build a network
that covers 25 percent of Germany by 2003. Many mobile operators
in Europe find it tough to reach the target set by its own government
and wants them to relax the terms.
MobilCom lacks a network of its own but does have a small fixed
line business. Analysts believe the operator should abandon its
3G plans and focus on reselling mobile services on other company's
networks.
Deutsche Telekom, a 3G license holder in Germany, along with MobilCom
have also ran into heavy debts.
