NTT DoCoMo slashed its subscription target
September 30, 2002
The Japanese cellular operator NTT DoCoMo, last week cut its subscription
target to its FOMA 3G handset service by 70% to 400,000. Since the
introduction of its 3G service last October, it has managed to attract
130,000 subscriptions.
The demand for 3G has been sluggish because of limited service
area, expensive handsets and short battery life of the handsets.
New models will come out at the end of the year, but the expensive
handsets will put many consumers off. The price of 3G handsets is
roughly double those of second generation handsets.
The operator expects only 140,000 subscriptions by this October,
less than the target of 150,000 set for March 2002.
