Pelephone launches 3G network
September 30, 2002
Israeli Cellular operator Pelephone, said on Monday that it had
launched its 3G network at a cost of $150 million.
The network is capable of 144Kbps and currently available only
in the Jerusalem area but will expand to other areas throughout
the country later in the year.
Pelephone calls its service 1X and is the first 3G service in Israel.
Other operators in Israel has implemented 2.5G networks instead
of diving into 3G networks. Applications include animated clips
and stock market tickers.
Analysts predict 2.5G will be around for longer than expected because
operators are facing problems in 3G roll out delays. The difference
between 2.5G and 3G is mainly the speed. Third generation services
will allow faster downloading of movies and music.
The 1X service also operates in Korea, Japan, the US, and Canada,
and the 1X network is based on equipment built by Nortel Networks.
