Hutchinson prepares for 3G in UK
September 30, 2002
Hutchison 3G will become the first operator in the UK to rollout
third generation network. The company offered its service, named
3, to 'friendly' users consisting of the company's business partners
and suppliers. Five hundred users will be able to access and test
the network using NEC handsets.
The move is described by the firm as a phased roll out and not
a launch. More handsets will be available by the end of the year
as the company continues to test both the UK and Italian networks.
A spokesman for Hutchinson said handsets could go on sale as early
as the end of the year and the network could cover 50% of the UK
population.
Analysts believe the move will put confidence in the industry and
could accelerate the roll out of other 3G networks.Third generations
promises video and music streaming with higher data access rate.
Many expect 3G services to take off in 2004.
