Sanyo plan to enter European maker in early 2004

September 4, 2003

Japan's third-largest consumer electronics maker, Sanyo Electric, said the company planned to enter the European WCDMA 3G mobile handset market as early as next year, Reuters' news reported.

Sanyo declined to comment on a Financial Times report that UK's Vodafone Group was in talks with Sanyo for 3G phones.

Reuters reported, a Sanyo spokesman said, "It is true we are considering going into the European 3G market. But we cannot comment on which carriers we are going to team up with."

Vodafone is expected to launch a 3G service in Europe by the end of the year and using handsets from Asian manufacturers as part of moves to reduce its dependence on Nokia.

Sanyo already supplies J-Phone, a unit of Vodafone, with 3G camera phones and has also been testing a 3G handset since April 2003, but unconfirmed by Sanyo.

Analysts said Sanyo will have an advantage over Nokia and many European handset makers, as the company already have commercial experience of releasing 3G handsets on a live network for Vodafone in Japan.
