Samsung and LG passes network test in China
September 11, 2003
Two South Korean telecom equipment makers have successfully passed China's
key technological network tests, a necessary step to supply equipment
for the country's 3G mobile service, company officials said.
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics were among 12 foreign and Chinese
firms which had undergone the eight-month tests which ended at the end
of August. Their competitors included Siemens, Alcatel, Nokia, Motorola
and Ericsson.
The test results are expected to affect the selection of the final suppliers,
industry sources said.
But several years may be needed to gain a market acceptance because of
unavailability of suitable handsets and slowed growth in the telecom industry,
which forces operators to be reluctant to invest in deploying 3G networks.
The technology of Samsung and LG is based on WCDMA standards.
According to South Korean industry officials, the Chinese government
is in favor of three standards - CDMA2000, WCDMA and TD-SCDMA.
In telecom industry, possessing core technology means huge profit.
However, most of the patents are still monopolized by America, Japan,
Europe, and South Korea. Core technology of CDMA is in hands of Qualcomm.
And core standard of GSM is possessed by telecom vendors in Europe. Because
of lack of core technology, China has paid expansive patent fee in building
the 1G and 2G mobile network.
But the Chinese owned TD-SCDMA 3G standard should balance the power of
play in the Chinese telecom market.
