SK Telecom and Alcatel Partner For 3G Mobile Payments

September 17, 2003 - source: BWCS

Korea’s largest mobile operator SK Telecom plans to develop 3G mobile payment applications in partnership with Alcatel. SK Telecom will work with the French vendor to develop new m-commerce services based on Alcatel’s wireless application platform. Although the two companies also plan to work on other 3G applications such as location-based services and gaming they have identified m-payments as a priority sector.

Once they have developed the m-commerce solution SK Telecom and Alcatel will carry out three months of testing before exporting the applications. The partners have identified emerging prepaid cellular markets in China, South East Asia and Europe as their key targets. South Korea is one of the most mature markets in the world for mobile payment services.

SK Telecom’s overseas strategy received a further boost yesterday with the announcement that it has signed on MoU with the Nordic telco TeliaSonera to cooperate in the development and commercialisation of 3G and W-LAN technologies.
