Orange Confirms 3G Partners
September 17, 2003 - source: BWCS
France-based mobile giant Orange has confirmed that it has signed non-binding
3G network supply contracts with Nortel, Nokia and Alcatel. However, the
operator did not say if the new 10-year framework agreements, which will
cover its entire footprint, would replace the current contracts with the
three vendors that end this year.
Officials at the mobile wing of France Telecom have been very cagey about
the financial details of any of the deals. A terse statement merely said
that “Amounts and conditions of the deals will be negotiated in the coming
months.” Indeed, it is believed that they only confirmed the existence
of the agreements in response to recent reports in the French press that
3G contracts hade been awarded.
According to Le Figaro, Nortel had been signed up to provide up to euros
1 billion (US$1.12 billion) worth of UMTS kit in France. Alcatel had also
told the press that it had been signed up to be the main supplier for
Orange’s 3G equipment in France and to be the second largest supplier
for the UK. Orange did not confirm either story.
The company did confirm that it plans to push ahead with a mid-2004 start
for 3G services in the UK. By launch-date it plans to be able to offer
services to 40% of the population. In France, the company says it has
been working for 18 months on developing the 'Villes Orange', Toulouse
and Lille, and building 3G capabilities. By the end of 2004, Orange will
have 3G coverage in ten major cities across the country. Orange operates
in the UK, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Romania, Denmark, Slovakia and
the Netherlands.
