3 Italy launches new tariff with free 3G handsets

Italian 3G operator, 3 Italia, has announced that it has launched a new 3G price plan that offers 3G handsets in an attempt to boost customer numbers on its next generation mobile network.

Subscribers will pay a one off initiate fee of Euro 99. To be eligible for a free video phone, customers would have also pay Euro 30 every month if they did not spend that amount on calls and services.

Voice call charges start from Euro 0.15 a minute when calling to other 3 customers or to landline numbers in Italy. Video calls cost Euro 0.45 per minute while phoning a rival cellular network incur an Euro 0.30 charge per minute.

The move has been seen by analysts as a push towards the Christmas rush in order to reach the firm's one million customer mark by the end of the year. It is estimated that 3 Italia currently has around 450,000 subscribers.
